AS NZS 4801

Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems

Superseded

AS/NZS 4801 was first published in Australia and New Zealand in 2001 as a joint Australian and New Zealand standard which specified the uniform requirements for an occupational health and safety management system (OH&SMS).

AS/NZS 4801 has been superseded by the new International Standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems ISO 45001:2018.

Standards Australia has marked AS/NZS 4801 as ‘Superseded’ but has not 'fully' withdrawn the standard as several states and territories still have it as a legislated requirement.  Once this legislation requirement is revoked in those states and territories, Standards Australia has indicated it will revoke AS/NZS 4801.  Until then AS/NZS 4801 will remain in place but only for organisations which have a specific requirement to meet the Standard.

The timeframe for certified organisations to migrate from AS/NZS 4801 to ISO 45001 has been set at 13 July 2023.  If you do not have contractual or legislative requirements for AS/NZS 4801 certified organisations must transition to ISO 45001 or risk their certification status.

Organisations who are not certified are not obligated to follow this timeframe.

Karza recommends organisations moving forward should be aiming to utilise ISO 45001. We will continue to support organisations with AS/NZS 4801 until they make the business decision to undertake the transition.
